A professional environment for Topic Maps collaborative editing and publishing

Topic Maps

As well as OWL ontologies, ITM can also be used to manage Topic Maps using the following functions:

  • import of XML Topic Maps format (XTM) files with verification of association types and occurrence types
  • fusion of the imported Topic Map importée with existing data
  • modification of a Topic Map with verification of association types and occurrence types
  • export of XML Topic Maps format (XTM) files
  • graphical representation of relations between Topics
  • navigation of Topic Maps
  • search over Topics (search by name, occurrences and associations)

ITM offers the following advantages over other Topic Map management software :

  • management of Topic classes, occurrence types and association types, thereby supporting contract verification of a Topic Map wrt its model
  • management of occurrence types : free text, dates, quantities, controlled fields, address of external resources for more fine grained management of a Topic's descriptive data

ITM also permits automatic creation and maintenance of Topic Maps using linguistic components for extraction of knowledge from text. For example linguistic analysis of the string "Alcatel to acquire Lucent" would result in the creation of the topics "Alcatel" and "Lucent" of class "Company", and the creation of an association of type "Acquisition" where the Topic "Alcatel" would have the role of acquirer and the Topic "Lucent" the role acquired. ITM permits the use of quite voluminous Topic Maps (several million Topics and Associations) for industrial applications. The solution has already been successfully deployed worldwide.

Mondeca was an active member of the Topic Maps standardization group in XTM.org and also contributed to its French translation.
